James Walton is in the bottom left hand corner. I would love to identify everyone else.
Might the officer in the photograph possibly be George H Simpson-Hayward? He was commissioned into the 4th Ox and Bucks in January 1915 and would likely be involved with army sports teams because he had been a footballer and was a cricketer for Worcestershire who toured S Africa with the MCC in 1909-10. He was famously one of the last of the under-arm bowlers or ‘lobsters’. I know from a contemporary newspaper that he skippered a 2/4th Ox & Bucks cricket side in a match at Epiing in July 1915.
Paul, I found this link that has a photograph of Simpson-Hayward playing cricket. http://www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/player/20197.html
It does look possible, although he would have been around 40 years of age in the tug of war photo.
Paul, is it possible that you can scan the article from the newspaper?
